Having A Business Mindset
Good Afternoon to all of my current and future Entrepreneurs. Welcome to the first of my Mindset4Business blog series, “Having a mindset for business.” One of the scariest things about being an adult is being without work. Without work, there is no money and without money, bills don’t get paid. I think what a lot of us do not realize is that we live in a capitalistic society. Capitalism is defined as an economic system based on three things:
1) You can earn money through wages (a job).
2) Passive income such as real estate or stock investment or
3) Start your own business.
I’d like to focus on the last one–starting your own business. It is my belief that when we are out of work, that doesn’t necessarily mean we are unemployed, we are now self-employed. However, to be self-employed requires a certain type of mindset.
First of all, let’s identify who you are. Did you just graduate from college and now looking for a nice employer who’s willing to take a chance on your top-knowledge, but no field experience having, self? Or are you that person who just got laid off from a job of 7+ years and is now spending your days and nights on CareerBuilder, looking for work and your callbacks either tell you that you are either under or overqualified for whatever position you’ve applied for. Do you know what both of these people have in common? They’re both walking with a suitcase load of skills that no one seems to recognize at the moment.
Now whichever person you fit in with, let me ask you something. Have you ever considered taking your skills directly to the source of your would-be paychecks? Hmm, I think I hear answers like, “Oh no I have no business experience,” or “I’m no good at marketing or talking to people” or “I have no sales skills.” Let me share a little secret with all of you. If you landed a job in the past, then believe me when I tell you, YOU HAVE EVERY BIT OF THESE SKILLS. You know I’ll do you one better. If you’ve been in a relationship or are married, got a boyfriend or girlfriend, yes indeed peeps, you have these skills. Every time you achieved any of what I listed for you, you were applying sales and marketing skills and I’m quite sure you’ve spoken to many people in the process. You’ve spoken to them about that great movie you saw or what fabulous restaurant you ate at that they just have to try. The thing is we sell and market ourselves every single day for some type of purpose. We just never got paid for it.
So now that you have all the needed skills, all you have left is to set some goals, write a plan, and execute it. Sounds simple right? Probably not. It’s actually a journey that begins and ends with you learning how to believe in yourself. My biggest issue was self-deprecation. Anytime someone would enlist my services for business purposes, I started going down the list of things that I couldn’t promise because I believed my skills weren’t good enough. One day a brutally honest individual finally called me out on it. He told me that I just talked myself out of what would’ve been an $1100 gig for me because I gave him too many reasons not to trust me. Then another gave me the proper response which was, “Yes I can give you what you’re asking because not only do I have the skills you are looking for, I also have access to countless resources that can back me up and do a phenomenal job for you.”
Do you know what helped me start believing (besides prayer)? The internet. Can any of you even begin to realize the true power behind social media and the unlimited amount of resources that are at your disposal? When you market your business online, your reach is GLOBAL!!! Imagine building an online business that is self-sustaining. In other words, you set it up to do all your business transactions, on its own, while you’re sleeping. Imagine waking up the next morning to find an extra $5000 in your account. Why do you think websites are in such high demand these days? Everyone wants that sort of job that allows them to kick back, relax, let the tech go to work and earn them thousands of dollars per day. Can that be done? Heck yes, it can be done. The trick is YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THAT!!!
This is what gets me up every morning and pushes me to keep building my own and keep learning more as I go along. It motivates me to socialize and network with different people who will either advise, educate, and/or work with me to grow my business to be bigger proportions. Then alliances are created and everything, that started out as a weakness, is either a new skill or a new person taking the reins for me. As my business starts to grow, so does my vision for it and so does my belief in it. That, my friends, concludes part 1 of my Mindset4Business series. In part 2, we will discuss goals and strategies. Thank you for your time and hope to see you soon. Happy Trails my new Business Owners!!!
